The Complete Guide to Reusable Bathroom Products

Most bathroom waste is not dramatic. It is not the big single-use plastics you think about when you think about sustainability. It is the small things used every day — cotton swabs, makeup pads, tissues — used for seconds and thrown away. Individually insignificant. Collectively, thousands of pieces per person per year.

LastSwab reusable cotton swab — sustainable bathroom product

Reusable bathroom products do not ask you to change your routine. They ask you to change what you reach for while doing it. This guide covers the three highest-frequency categories and what switching to each actually means in practice.

Cotton Swabs

The single-use cotton swab is one of the most wasteful bathroom products by volume. Used once — for ear cleaning, makeup touch-ups, or first aid — and discarded. At one use per day, one person goes through around 365 swabs per year. The cotton and plastic stick accumulate.

Reusable alternative: LastSwab uses a TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) tip that cleans in the same way, rinses clean under the tap, and lasts approximately 1,000 uses. Same technique, no daily waste.

LastRound reusable makeup pads — in use, sustainable beauty

It comes in two versions: Original (rounded tip, for ears and general use) and Beauty (pointed tip, for makeup precision). Both come in a snap-close bioplastic case.

Care: Rinse with water after each use. Mild soap occasionally. Air dry before closing the case.

Makeup Pads and Cotton Rounds

Disposable cotton rounds are used in makeup removal and skincare routines — often two or three times per day. At that rate, one person uses 700–1,000 pads per year. They are single-use by design.

Reusable alternative: LastRound is a set of 7 reusable pads made from plant-based materials. They work with all skincare products — micellar water, toner, makeup remover — and machine wash at 30°C. The textured side removes makeup; the smooth side applies product.

One set of 7 replaces approximately 1,750 single-use cotton rounds over its lifetime.

Care: Place in the mesh laundry bag and add to your regular 30°C wash. No special detergent. Hang or tumble dry on low.

Tissues

Disposable tissues are paper — biodegradable in the right conditions, but typically ending up in a bin bag going to landfill, where decomposition is slow. The wrapper packaging is usually plastic. One person can go through several tissue packs per week during cold and hayfever seasons.

Reusable alternative: LastTissue is a pack of 6 soft organic cotton tissues in a two-compartment silicone case. Used tissues go into the sealed used compartment — separate from clean ones. All 6 wash at 30°C with your regular laundry.

One LastTissue pack replaces approximately 520 disposable tissue packs over its lifetime.

Care: Wash at 30°C when the used compartment is full. No special wash cycle required.

Making the Switch

The most practical approach is to replace items as your current supply runs out, not before. When your cotton swab box runs low, switch to a reusable one. When your cotton pads run down, replace with washable rounds. This avoids waste from discarding products you already own and makes each switch feel routine rather than a project.

None of these changes affect what products you use — your cleanser, micellar water, toner, and remover all stay the same. The only change is which applicator you reach for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are reusable bathroom products hygienic?

Yes, with regular cleaning. Rinsed TPE swabs, washed cotton pads, and laundered tissues are all as hygienic as their disposable equivalents used correctly. The same logic applies as with reusable towels: wash regularly and they stay clean.

How much does switching cost?

Each product costs more upfront than a single pack of disposables, but costs less over time. LastSwab, LastRound, and LastTissue together cost under £50 and replace thousands of items that would otherwise be purchased and discarded over the same period.

What if I live with other people?

Cotton swabs and makeup pads are personal items — each person should have their own, as with a toothbrush. LastTissue can be shared more readily. Consider one set per person for the personal items.

Do these products work in hard water areas?

Yes. Hard water does not affect the cleaning performance of any of the three products. If limescale builds up on the LastSwab case over time, a brief soak in diluted white vinegar clears it.

Can I travel with these?

All three are travel-friendly. LastSwab fits in a toiletries bag without taking up the space of a tube of swabs. LastRound pads sit in their compact case. LastTissue folds flat. None require special storage or airline-specific considerations.
